MBAT!!!

Posted by in Student life

Basketball team

Before starting the MBA program I was told the MBA Tournament (MBAT) would be one of the highlights of the MBA experience, and having just returned from 4 days in Paris, I could not agree more. Wow! Good times! Loads of sports, cheering, parties and fun fun fun! I had a blast! And I feel so much more bonded with my classmates now. 14 schools participated in this tournament. In previous years this only included European business schools, but this year Harvard even joined from the US to play football/soccer of all things (and they won!). A great atmosphere existed…

The unintended implications of being an MBA Marketing & Admissions Manager

Posted by in MBA Admissions blog

Bart Blue&Whitesmall

Who knew what I was getting myself into when I joined Rotterdam School of Management over 3 years ago! I came from a completely different AND corporate background within the oil, gas and shipping industry. OK I have been dealing with international development of the human factor a.k.a being and Human Resources Office for international companies but working for a business school is just a little different I actually never realized until yesterday evening – not sure where this epiphany came from – that working at the admissions department definitely enlarged my scope on todays and tomorrows world and life…

Incredible India!

Posted by in MBA Admissions blog

India2

I always say to people that I feel I have really travelled if I go to a country where it feels “foreign”. A country where your senses are constantly confronted, where your assumptions are constantly being challenged and where your comfort zone is constantly stretched – India is such a country. Travelling back there after having been away for two years just made me realise again how much I love this place. The sights, the sounds, the smells…. It’s as if you feel the heartbeat of the country the moment you set foot on Indian soil. I love the energy,…

Dianne Bevelander: Mentoring takes time but it is rewarding! Find mentors who believe in you, and believe in the people you are mentoring!

diannenewsept12

Dear WE readers, Whenever I discuss the topic of gender in my classes I am confronted by a number of people who believe that issues of gender-based access and opportunity are subjects of the past. While the assumption may seem a reasonable one at first glance, the sad reality is that gender discrimination in the workplace remains a relevant and pressing issue.  This becomes apparent to executives and students as soon as I start probing with questions like: How many women managers or executives have you reported to? How often have you had classes or attended workshops where the keynote…

Loving the celebrations…

Birthdays usually do not mean anything special to me but after living in the dormitory with people from other nationalities, birthdays have now a different meaning for me. Birthday celebrations are such warm affairs here! Fellow dorm-mates arranging surprises, gathering other classmates living in the same dormitory (or even calling classmates living nearby) and just having fun! And when I say fun, it means smudging the entire face of the birthday person with cake (seems like a tradition from the Indians) and much more (which of course is subjected to your imagination). I love it how that people might only…

Pace increase

Posted by in Student life

Time flies by and keeps accelerating! After a week of very interesting lessons on communication, social networks and leadership, the core courses of the first MBA term started. This is the stuff why I came here! Biz talk from morning till night… We dig into balance sheets and income statements, learn how to simulate business problems, interpret the simulation outcome and take decisions from a management perspective. It may sound weird but I am somehow into managerial accounting. It is really exciting to see the impact of strategic management decisions in the financial figures of a company. At the same…

First week completed

Posted by in Student life

Time is not linear, at least if one believes in what Albert Einstein told us. The first week in university has passed and although it flew by in fast forward mode, last Monday feels very far away because the time in between was packed with information, activities and impressions: We heard speeches from a lot of different people and all of them were either rhetorically great or very interesting or both. During the week we already had two career development workshops which gave us a glimpse into the manifold options that we have to network and hunt jobs during the…

From beach life to honeymoon phase

Posted by in Student life

After quitting my job and spending some 7 weeks on the windy beaches of South Africa and the beautiful city of Cape Town, I have moved to Rotterdam to be a student again. Within the next year, I will participate in the MBA class of Rotterdam School of Management. Settling was fairly easy and my small but functional apartment in the De Schans building will be a good place to study, eat and sleep for the next 12 months. The biggest asset of the apartment besides being a 5 minute walk from campus is that it has a lot of…

Home is where the heart is…

Posted by in Student life

..And where the remnants of previous term’s assignments lie, where text books are neatly (?) stacked up and where there is a permanently lingering fragrance of coffee, thanks to the numerous hours spent awake during term one. Yes, Rotterdam does feel like home – the notion reaffirmed during my vacation, touring parts of Europe. As enjoyable as the past few days have been, it feels really good to be back in Rotterdam sitting at my laptop making grand plans for the months to come. Term one was all about fun and games – there was a lot of sports, cooking,…
