FAQs

Posted by in Student life

Many prospective students have asked me ‘how are the placements?’ Some even send me a brief background and ask if they can find a job post their MBA. Some enquire the possibilities of landing a job in Europe post MBA. In this blog I provide my views on the subject and it could be useful to some of you who are considering an MBA. I have avoided listing down all the questions but instead focused on covering most of them. We all are aware of the economic situation and the fact is the number of available opportunities stand reduced. But,…

Lesson Learnt

Posted by in Student life

I am done with my summer internship and more importantly the summer report. The summer report in a way was tougher than the internship. As time passed the deliverables too increased and I am happy that I could deliver satisfactorily on all responsibilities assigned to me. As anticipated there was not much in terms of learning for me. I had to do work that I had actually done in 2002 and there was not much of a value add to my knowledge. There were some positives out of the internship. Apart from the excellent weather for most part of the…

Summer – progress report

Posted by in Student life

Its been a little over 2 weeks since I started my internship. I finished my morning cup of tea, read the 2 mails (official) I received and then what? I decided to write a blog. If you are wondering how come I have been writing so often, no prises for guessing……yup, I am idle for most of the time. I had literally no work for the last 2 days. Even on the days I do have some work I have ample time. I have utilised the time reading many of the articles posted on the students blackboard (a web based…

What to expect from an MBA?

Posted by in Student life

Over the period of the programme, I have observed students who get concerned, as they feel they have not gained great knowledge in a particular subject. Especially this is very apparent in courses like accounting and finance. This leads us to the most important question, “What to expect from an MBA?” The MBA programme covers various subjects such as operations, marketing, finance, strategy and human resource management. The basic objective of the programme is to equip students with skills that would help them be better managers. Some of the students would already posses certain skills and knowledge because of their…

Summer Internship a boon or a bane?

Posted by in Student life

The principal purpose of a summer internship is to provide an opportunity for students to employ their learnings from the MBA programme at work. The internship could also result in full time opportunities depending on the requirements of the company and the student. Securing summer internships has been tough for students this year. You all are aware of the economic scenario and the fact that many companies have put a freeze on new hiring. Probably all students may not have an internship this summer. Something unheard off in recent memory of the school. I personally am not fascinated by the…

Why the Rotterdam School of Management?

Posted by in Student life

My wife happened to read my earlier 2 blogs. She told me with a big smile on her face that those were the most boring articles and that she did not complete reading them. I could only thank her for her feedback and requested her not to read any of the blogs in future. I also decided to keep the write up short to ensure that it’s at least remotely interesting. I have been quite frequently asked, ‘why did you choose RSM?’. A former colleague and friend of mine also wanted to know about the schools I had considered and…

End of term 1……I feel relieved

Posted by in Student life

I am writing this blog after the end of Term 1. Its been a little over 3 months. Time moves quite fast. Term 1 kept me quite occupied with the team assignments, self study required and at the same time spending some quality time with my family. We were taught subjects that could have a potential business use. We had management science, economics, organization behavior, accounting and quantitative platform for business. Management science covered linear programming and simulation techniques that were quite useful to learn. The economics professor from South Africa made economics very interesting and easier to understand. Being…

Back to school

Posted by in Student life

Its been a desire I developed over the last few years that I needed an MBA degree. General Management & leadership always fascinated me and being a Certified Accountant was not necessarily helping me in moving higher up the corporate hierarchy at a satisfactory pace. After working for close to 10 years I had to decide whether I should go back to School. It was never going to be an easy decision. My hair had already started to grey and I was not too young at 35. Do I search for schools where I could pursue my higher education or…
